1861: Brig. Gen. Robert Anderson, former commander of theFort Sumter, S.C., was relieved of his command of the Department of Kentucky. Also, a Confederate blockade runner was captured off the coast of Charleston, S.C.

1862: During the Confederate Heartland Offensive in Kentucky, skirmishes were fought on this day at Fair Grounds, Springfield, Burnt Crossroads, Beach Fork, and Grassy Mound.

1863: Captain William C. Quantrill's Partisan Rangers (aka "Quantrill's Raiders") fought at the Battle of Baxter Spring, Kansas, with Company C of the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry, commanded by 1st Lt. James Pond.
